Four mechanisms cover most of what you'll encounter:

The pull-out frame is the traditional "hide-a-bed." It works, but the metal crossbar and extra setup steps are the most common complaints. The pop-up platform avoids the bar but takes more effort.

The best fold out sofa bed handles sitting and sleeping equally well — here's what to look for.

Seat depth. Deeper is better for lounging and sleeping. The Koala Sofa Bed [4th Gen] offers 23.5" seats with a perfectly angled backrest and lumbar support. The Byron Sofa Bed [3rd Gen] goes to 42" — among the deepest available in the US, built for stretching out.

Integrated sleep surface. Top-tier designs include a built-in comfort layer, not a bare fabric base. Koala uses Kloudcell™ — an open-cell foam that delivers support, breathability, and responsiveness — across all three sofa beds. On the Byron, that's a 6-inch integrated sleep surface. Fold Out Sofa Bed Dimensions & Measurements

Check three numbers before buying any fold out sofa bed: sofa width, open depth, and delivery box length. Getting one wrong means a return.

Open depth is the number people overlook. It's the total floor clearance the sofa needs when fully extended as a bed. The Koala Sofa Bed [4th Gen] (70" Queen) needs 88" in front of it. The Byron (92" Queen) needs 70". Measure your room before you measure the sofa.

Delivery and doorways. Koala sofa beds ship flat-packed — the 4th Gen and Byron each arrive in 5 boxes, the Wanda in 4. The Byron's longest box is 86.2" — over 7 feet. Measure your longest clear run (hallway length, stairwell, tight turns) against the individual box dimensions on each product page before ordering.

Materials & Fabric Guide

The fabric your fold out sofa bed wears every day matters as much as the foam underneath it. Koala's sofa bed range uses tiered fabric options across each model:

Classic Fabric — available on all three sofa beds. The 4th Gen and Byron Classic use 100% recycled polyester face fabric; the Wanda is 100% recycled polyester face across all its colorways. All are water-resistant on the 4th Gen and Byron.

Luxe — available on the Koala Sofa Bed [4th Gen] only. A dobby-weave blend (65% polyester, 35% recycled polyester).

Premium Fabric — on the 4th Gen, this is a corduroy (90% recycled polyester, 10% nylon). On the Byron, it's a plush boucle (78% polyester, 22% recycled polyester). Machine-washable on both.

Recycled content varies by product and tier. The 4th Gen cover face fabrics contain a minimum of 35% recycled polyester. Byron covers contain at least 20% recycled polyester on the face fabric. Wanda's upholstery is 100% recycled polyester face.

A critical note on washability. The 4th Gen and Byron have removable, machine-washable covers — a significant advantage for a sofa bed that pulls double duty. The Wanda's covers are spot-clean only ("Do not machine wash"). If machine-washable covers are non-negotiable, choose the 4th Gen or Byron.

All three sofa beds use FSC®-certified timber frames and CertiPUR-US® certified polyurethane foam. Frame linings on the 4th Gen and Byron are 100% Recycled Polyester.

Care Instructions

Fold out sofa bed care is straightforward — the key is consistency, not complexity.

Weekly. Vacuum with low suction to remove dust from cushions and the sleep surface. Keep the sofa out of direct sunlight.

Spills. Blot immediately with a clean dry cloth — don't rub. Water-resistant fabric (4th Gen and Byron) slows absorption; it isn't waterproof.

Covers — 4th Gen and Byron. Machine wash cold, gentle cycle. Reshape while damp and line dry in shade. No tumble drying, no ironing. Refit slightly damp for a better fit.

Covers — Wanda. Spot clean only with warm water and mild detergent. Do not machine wash, tumble dry, bleach, iron, or dry clean.

Sleep topper — 4th Gen and Byron. The zip-off topper washes separately — machine wash cold and line dry. Clean it between guest stays.

Linings (all models). Linings have zippers but should not be removed — spot clean only. Never saturate the foam underneath.

Pilling. Normal with everyday use. Check your care label before using a battery-operated fabric shaver on your specific fabric.

Heat. Keep the sofa away from cigarettes, open flames, and uncovered heat sources, including electric and gas stoves.
